Swimmer Arm Labeling 101

On this page, we have some information about how to mark your swimmer's arm with their events.  Hopefully this answers any questions you might have.  It's important to note that it's very helpful to mark your swimmer's arm before arriving but if you cannot, the tent parents will make sure they have their events written.

First we have a short video clip that provides details of how to label your swimmer's arm with their events, heats and lanes. Click on link below to video.

Swimmer Arm Labeling Video

The video covers all the details but just in case, we have an example below with a picture.  Let's say your child is swimming the following:

  • 25 Freestyle - Event 12, Heat 2, Lane 3
  • 25 Backstroke - Event 32, Heat 1, Lane 6
  • 25 Breaststroke - Event 46, Heat 3, Lane 1

You would take this information and mark their arm with the following:

  • 12-2-3
  • 32-1-6
  • 46-3-1

Below you will see a picture of what it should look like. In addition, you can write your swimmer's name at the top. This is helpful for the Ready Bench and Timers.

Another thing to note is events may change based on the meet circumstances.  Sometimes heats will be combined or due to no shows, relay teams will be changed at the last minute.  Relay information will be on the heat sheet so you can write that on your swimmer's.  If there are any no shows for a team (scratches), then the coaches may have to adjust the relay teams, potentially changing what was written on your swimmer's arm.  Have no fear, your amazing tent parents are there!  They will work with the Coaches and Ready Bench to make sure your swimmer is in the right place for their events.

Arm Labeling Take Aways:

  • Try to mark your swimmer's arm before they arrive at the meet.
  • Do this BEFORE sunscreen and try not to put lots of sunscreen on top of the marker area of the skin.  It will rub off the sharpie.
  • If possible, stick to the shoulder area. It rubs off easily on the inside of the arm.
  • Use only BLACK sharpie (colors wear off easily/don’t show as well) .
  • Make sure events are in the order your swimmer will swim them.
  • Make sure you write the numbers in this order: Event - Heat - Lane
  • Things do change the day of the meet so let your child know that a Coach or Tent Parent will help them.
  • When in doubt, talk to a Coach or Tent Parent for help.

EXAMPLE - NOTE: This was drawn on by the person taking this photo so they could not write on their upper arm/shoulder area. This photo is here to provide a close-up example of what the final product should look like.
